Sabers saw extensive use during the Nineteenth Century in both Europe and the United States. Though it is unclear where sabers originated, it is thought to be related to the scimitar sword as it often shares the curved blade and a single edge. Sometimes, however, especially those used by cavalry had straight blades which were easier to fight with. Most sabers were carried by hanging it off the shoulder in a scabbard. There was, however a type of saber called Patton saber which was used by the United States Army in the early 1900's and was always carried on the saddle of the cavalryman's horse. Sabers are easily identifiable by the usually large hand guard was used to protect the thumb, forefinger and knuckles. The length of sabers was varied depending on the intended use of the weapon.

The uses of sabers are found in some well-known battles, such as the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Sabers started disappearing from combat with the advent of the long-range rifle.
Today, sabers are still worn by American Navy, Coast Guard and Army, but not during combat. It has become part of their traditional uniform worn only for ceremonial purposes.
