Full Tang Swords
The tang of a sword is the part of the blade that extends into the handle that is attached to it. Full tang refers to a single piece of metal that goes all the way from the blade tip to the end of the handle, with the hilt usually totally encased. The flat pieces of handle material that are affixed to either side of the metal are called scales usually with pins or rivets. Some full tang swords instead have the tang wrapped in leather or cord to increase grip instead of attaching scales as a handle.
Full Tang swords are often seen as more durable; as stub tang swords only have the metal affixed a short ways into the handle, making it weak at the attachment point. Most full tang swords manufactured today are katanas, which are swords that the samurai used. Katanas are characterized by a slim curved and single-edged blade with the tang surrounded by scales of wood or plastic in less expensive swords, and held by brass pins. Full tang ninja swords can also be found in today's market and are usually found with a handle wrapped in a nylon or leather cord.
