Crusader Swords
The Crusades were military campaigns that consumed most of Europe during the mid-1000 to the late 1200 AD. They were religiously driven, with Christians fighting mainly against the Muslims, but also fought against Jews, Greek Orthodox Christians and enemies of the Pope.
The original purpose of the Crusades were to regain control of Jerusalem from the rule of the Muslims but eventually went into Venice and Constantinople. Because of the 200 years, or so, of the main Crusades (there were almost twenty main crusades, or battles in total), the manufacturing of weapons, including swords and their materials changed. The wearing of mail became more and more popular by the warriors, and even though chain mail could be cut, it also helped to deflect blows.
The crusaders swords then, had to increase slightly in weight so there was more force when swung or thrust. A crusader's sword weighed between two to four pounds and was typically used with two hands. They were essentially long swords with a double-edged flat blade that were often 40 inches or so in length. The Knight's Templar (secular knights who banded together and took monastic vows) also had their own swords. They were often more elaborate than ordinary Crusader swords. With some of the Templar Knights swords being adorned with jewels which reflected the Knights postion and sincerety of heart.
